Which Model S is the most reliable ?

When buying a Tesla Model S, price and free supercharging are top priorities. Note that only Teslas made before April 2017 have free supercharging that stays with the car. However, certain conditions can void this benefit, such as being resold to Tesla, repaired outside authorized dealers, or purchased from certain dealers in Norway.

Key points:

  1. Warranty: All Model S and X cars made until March 2020 have an 8-year unlimited mileage warranty.
  2. Dual Drive (AWD): Models like 70D, 75D, 85D, 90D, and 100D are reliable, with the 75D being particularly noteworthy for its efficient battery and charging speed.
  3. Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Models like S60, S70, S75, S85, and S90 have free lifetime supercharging but may require preventive engine repairs due to coolant leaks.
  4. Performance Models (PxxD): Less reliable due to the large drive unit prone to coolant leaks, leading to high repair costs. These models are intended for sports use with high power and torque.

The most reliable models are the 70D and 75D, each offering 240 kW of power, alongside the 85D, 90D, and 100D models with 315 kW.

The standout is the 75D, equipped with a 72.4 kWh battery—comparable to the Model S 85 but lighter by 50 kg due to 14 battery blocks instead of 16. It excels in fast charging, delivering 128 kW and covering 200 km in just 20 minutes, even for vehicles with over 300,000 kilometers.

Even after 300,000 kilometers, the 75D shows remarkable reliability with original half-axles still intact. In contrast, the 85D, 90D, and 100D models require the kinetic joint of the half-axle replaced every 100,000 km, costing an additional 2000 euros each time due to their higher power and torque on the front wheels.

Common issues to check:

  • Motor noise, transmission knocking, suspension sounds, and supercharger functionality.
  • Battery condition: Avoid large dents over 8mm on the battery case to maintain warranty.

Recommended models by criteria:

  • Top Performance: P90D, P100D
  • Mid Performance: 85D, 90D, 100D
  • Range: 100D
  • Cost-efficient: 85, 90, P85, P85D

When purchasing, conduct a thorough inspection and factor in potential repair expenses. Vehicles from Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, France, Sweden, and Norway are generally preferred. It is advisable to avoid vehicles from Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, and Bulgaria due to maintenance problems and potential odometer tampering.

For frequent travelers, choose models with fast charging capabilities. Mileage on a Tesla is less of a concern as high-mileage vehicles are often in excellent condition both inside and out. The Model S is constructed with high-quality materials, and its aluminum body prevents corrosion.

Before purchasing, ensure the motor is quiet (no unusual noises should be present). When switching from Drive to Reverse, the transmission should not produce a knocking sound (which could indicate a broken rubber bracket). Listen for any knocking noises from the suspension while driving, and verify that the vehicle charges properly at a supercharger (charging issues could suggest fraud or malfunctions). These checks are essential for making an informed purchase. Any defects identified should affect the vehicle's price, but not necessarily your decision to buy.

Some models may include a CCS adapter for fast charging, an MCU2 middle screen with YouTube and Netflix, or upgraded knobs to revision 3, all of which enhance the vehicle's value. Lastly, inspect the battery from underneath. Look for dents on the case; dents larger than 8mm could void the battery warranty. Minor scratches are not a concern, but significant dents and holes could be problematic. Use a flashlight and a phone camera to examine the battery floor, or lift the vehicle with a crane for a better view

It is preferable that the vehicle has:

  • MCU2 retrofit - worth 1550 EUR
  • CCS Upgrade - worth 150 EUR
  • Glass roof or hard roof - even quieter and more comfortable
  • Tow hook - worth 2000 EUR
  • Free supercharging - worth 5000 EUR
